Black Myth: Wukong Game Story Background
The Buddhist monk Tang Shanzhang is also present in Black Myth: Wukong’s backstory. The Destined One (whose characteristics refer to the original Sun Wukong) should have ascended to heaven. However, his choices of having fun with other beings lead him to several assaults and attacks from unwanted enemies.
It’s not that the Destined One intentionally chased for worldly pleasure nor that he is not spiritual enough. The Destined One still has the relics in mind; he wants to collect them. However, not all beings can accept his unconventional ways of “toying around”.
The Celestial Court members resent the Destined One the most. So, they send armies to make the Destined One cancel his mission and submit to the Court, no matter what players will encounter these boss monsters as they play through all of the available chapters.
Since “Journey to the West”, the original version has Buddhist elements, players will see many temples as the setting places for the characters’ dialogues, fighting boss monsters, get all of the relics.
Black Myth: Wukong Game Release Date
Black Myth: Wukong release date was originally around the 2020s. That time, Game Science Interactive Technology Co., Ltd. (a.k.a. “Game Science”) plans to use the most progressive Unreal Engine 5 to design and adjust the characters’ movements and animations. Yet, it receives huge criticism from players and analysts.
So, 2024 marks the official release of Black Myth: Wukong game on PlayStation (PS) 5 and Steam. More precisely, Game Science released the game for the PS5 platform on August 19, 2024, and the Steam platform one day after the PS5 release. Soon, they will release it on the Xbox platform, which makes “TBA” the release date for the Xbox platform.
Black Myth: Wukong Game Characters
Like the original version, Black Myth: Wukong also has the legendary and humorous Sun Wukong as the main character. Here, his name is “The Destined One”. In the original version, Tang Shanzang, Wukong’s teacher only stays in the introduction chapter.
It leaves Sun Wukong with Zhu Bajie (the boar). The difference from the original version is that Zhu Bajie fights Sun Wukong in Chapter 4 instead of becoming his trusted ally. He must also fight Erlang, the Celestial Court’s Sacred Divinity, who aims to seal him for good.
“The Destined One” soon has to face his stone self as the final boss which leads to two alternate endings from the game.

PlayStation (PS5)
PlayStation (PS) 5 becomes the most sought-after platform to play Black Myth: Wukong while enjoying the storyline. It is because the game developer released the game for the PS5 platform before they released it in other platforms. Many people also praise the smooth Unreal Engine graphics. The Destined One’s movements also feel more agile and overpowered in this game version.
Players can use action buttons, such as Triangle (for Heavy Attacks), Rectangle (for Light Attacks), Circle (for Dodge), and X (for Jump), while they play as the Destined One on PS5. Some other movements, such as L2+R2’s combo of Use Spirit and L2 Staff Spins are also attractive in the PS5 version.
Steam
Having a Steam account on PC will also let players access Black Myth: Wukong. The controllers are more memorable than the PS version. After all, like any other PC-based action game, WASD is for movements (the Destined One going to the left, right, etc sides), and dialing any number pads between 1-4 lets players use spells based on the available slots.
The “R” control for drinking the gourd is one-of-a-kind in the Steam version. The PS5 uses L1, which leads some players to think other mouse or keyboard pads should replace the “R”. Yet, it doesn’t. Xbox
Until now, there has been no official news from Game Science of the Xbox platform’s date release. So, predicting how to operate the control buttons is the only thing we can do. Given that Xbox has become PlayStation’s most considerable rival during the last few decades, we predict the controllers won’t be as far as the PS5 version.
If there were any variations, perhaps the main action buttons won’t change. Yet, the functions might be different. For instance, Triangle in PS5 is equal to Xbox’s Y. The PS5 version uses Triangle for Heavy Attack. For Xbox, the “Y” button can be for jumping. Xbox’s view button will also be useful for the Camera or Photo Mode feature.

No matter which adaptations the characters are in, Sun Wukong is always a Celestial monkey seeking relics while applying Buddhist values in his life. He is also the Monkey King who loves to play with dangerous beings.
Black Myth: Wukong movie emphasizes the Monkey King’s ascension after 15,000 years and how powerful he is after reaching his cultivation. No more other characters in the short movie’s storyline. This time, the Monkey King from the Deity Realm takes on a loyal disciple.
Clive Douglas, the disciple, doesn’t only take on Erlang’s costumes and characteristics as inspiration. The episodes in Black Myth: My Master Is Wukong also grant him some interesting story plots: Revenge to his brother on his mother’s death and partnering with the Monkey King to defeat the Dragon Priest and other Celestial beings defending his brother.
Review
The original “Journey to the West” version has four main characters apart from Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Some other main characters are also present in the adapted game version, for example. Yet, none of them appear in Black Myth: My Master Is Wukong, the short movie version.
That’s a way to emphasize the Monkey King’s unbridled and untameable nature. That way, the movie director can highlight the Monkey King’s demonic aura while not losing the playful essence of his personality. Those things become other reasons to watch Black Myth: My Master Is Wukong.
The “My Master” part in the short movie version also provides a unique POV based on Clive’s characteristics. Clive (or “Erlang”, or any of the Celestial beings) no longer becomes the enemy; he humbles himself before the Monkey King, a Divine being, whom he regards as his ascended master.
